Action: Bake to the future

Action: Bake to the future

For the Biennale Svizzera del Territorio 2024, we revisit the concept of traditional communal baking houses, guided by the theme “Back to the Future.” These architectural machines were not just resource-efficient solutions for bread-making but also central as social hubs. The installation invites reflection on the enduring presence of bread—a constant across different times and contexts. While bread itself remains unchanged, its role shifts, moving from a crucial resource in times of crisis to a symbol of community in contemporary, often gentrified, social settings.

We also observe that the nature of community formation has evolved. In the past, communities were often rooted in physical proximity and shared birthplace. Today, however, they are shaped by more fluid and dynamic factors, with people less bound by geography and more by shared interests or circumstances. Our installation responds to these shifts by being modular, nomadic, and adaptable, capable of moving with communities and adjusting to different environments and needs. It offers a space that reflects on how traditions like communal baking might adapt to the changing nature of human connections.

Workshop
Join master bakers at the temporary baking house, a space dedicated to reimagining communal baking traditions, located at Villa Saroli. This hands-on session offers a chance to explore the art of bread making while learning about the rich tradition and craft involved. Whether you’re experienced or just curious, this workshop is about gathering, learning, and enjoying the process as an ad-hoc community. With limited spots available, it’s a unique opportunity to knead, bake, and share stories and experiences around the oven.
Twenty spots will be available, 10 for the morning and 10 for the afternoon baking sessions. To reserve your spot and be part of this special experience, please register by emailing Info@i2a.ch
